May 31, 1969: Makati Medical Center formally opened its doors to the public.

The Makati Medical Center (MMC), located at Legaspi Village in Makati City, is a tertiary hospital in the Philippines with more than 600 beds. It started operations on May 31, 1969 and is currently one of the hospitals owned and operated by Medical Doctors Inc., a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.The 609-bed tertiary hospital has a building area of 50,000 square meters. As of January 2013, the hospital had 811 staff physicians.

Morbid Trivia:

As a testament to the quality of healthcare service and the stature of MMC as one of the premier hospitals in the country and the world, prominent personalities like former Presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Cory Aquino entrusted their health to MMC. Unfortunately both died at MMC also after long bouts of illnesses. Macapagal died of heart failure, pneumonia and renal complications on April 21, 1997. The 11th President of the Philippines, Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino, died on August 1, 2009 after having suffered from colon cancer for over a year. Her official cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest. Aquino was first diagnosed to have cancer in March 2008, and was hospitalized from June 2009 until her death.

May 6, 1943: State visit of Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo to Manila, Philippines.

Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo landed in Nichols Field, Manila, for state visit to the Philippines.

On May 6, 1943, Japanese Premier Hideki Tojo (Kyūjitai: 東條 英機; Shinjitai: 東条 英機;  Tōjō Hideki ; December 30, 1884 – December 23, 1948) during his first visit to the Philippines pledged to establish the Republic of the Philippines and promised to return independence as part of its propaganda of Pan-Asianism (Asia for the Asians). This prompted the Kapisanan ng Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI; Association for Service to the New Philippines) to call for a convention on June 19, 1943 where twenty of its members were elected to form the Preparatory Commission for Independence. KALIBAPI, was a Filipino political party that served as the sole party of state during the Japanese occupation intended to be a Filipino version of Japan's governing Taisei Yokusankai party. 

The commission tasked to draft a constitution for the Philippine Republic and elected head was José Paciano Laurel y García, (March 9, 1891 – November 6, 1959). The Preparatory Commission presented its draft Constitution on September 4, 1943 and three days later, the KALIBAPI general assembly ratified the draft Constitution. 

Tojo was a general of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), the leader of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, and the 40th Prime Minister of Japan during much of World War II, from October 17, 1941 to July 22, 1944. As Prime Minister, he was responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, which initiated war between Japan and the United States, although planning for it had begun before he entered office. After the end of the war, Tojo was arrested, sentenced to death for Japanese war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and hanged on December 23, 1948.

Chōdenji Machine Voltes V (超電磁マシーン ボルテスＶ Chōdenji Mashīn Borutesu Faibu, Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes Five) more popularly known as Voltes V, is a Japanese anime television series first aired on TV Asahi starting June 4, 1977. Voltes V was a super electromagnetic machine made up of five volt machines that needed to unite or “volt in” in order to form the robot.It was created by Saburo Yatsude (a pseudonym referring to a committee within Toei Company) and directed by Tadao Nagahama.

Voltes V is the second part of the Robot Romance Trilogy of the Super Robot genre which includes Chōdenji Robo Combattler V and Tōshō Daimos.

In the Philippines, since May 5, 1978, an English-language dub of Voltes V was first aired on GMA-7, which was shown every Friday (6:00 pm) and lasted for a year until 1979.

Ferdinand Marcos and Voltes V

In 1979, before the series finale, then-president Ferdinand Marcos issued a directive banning Voltes V and other similarly-themed anime series due to concerns about "excessive violence". The directive also led to speculations at the time that the series was also taken off the air due to its aforementioned revolutionary undertones.

Even now the show has angry fans who can’t forget what President Marcos did to their favorite anime. The fans got some payback on President Marcos during the celebration of People Power Revolution in 2014 through this art installation named “Last, Lost, Lust for Four Episodes” presented at the University of The Philippines Dilliman which features the head of the President himself.

The title refers to the last four episodes of Voltes V which were never aired after Marcos regime banned it. “Last” that the dark period in Philippine History is the last and it will never happen again. “Lost” refers to a generation of robot anime fans who felt no closure as they never saw the ending of their favorite cartoon series. Lost are also the desaparecidos and those who lost their livelihoods and futures because of Martial Law. “Lust” refers not only to the longing of these fans to watch the final four episodes, but with lust for power that characterized the Martial Law Regime.

The sculpture is an allegory of Toym Leon Imao's  anger as a child deprived of his favorite TV show, and his involvement in the struggle for freedom during the Marcos regime. In this masterpiece, he revealed his understanding of our history – the triumph of Filipinos struggle to regain peace and democracy in the country. 

He labeled Marcos as the hegemonic Boazanian Emperor, depicted in his artwork as the Boazanian Skull with horns starship, as his representation of the ‘Sky Rook’.

The 43rd Miss Universe 1994 pageant, was held at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center, in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on May 21 (starting 9 a.m. Manila Time) . It was Manila's second time to host the pageant, having hosted Miss Universe 1974 twenty years earlier.

Sushmita Sen from India was crowned by outgoing titleholder Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico, besting early favorites Carolina Gómez of Colombia and Minorka Mercado of Venezuela. Sen is the first Indian to be Miss Universe.
